What is a ABS

An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a safety anti-skid braking system used on aircraft and on land vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, trucks and buses. ABS operates by preventing the wheels from locking up during braking, thereby maintaining tractive contact with the road surface.

The anti-lock braking system ensures that the wheels are always in tractive contact when driving by preventing the brakes from locking up and avoid skidding. The ABS pump consists of an ECU which monitors the speed of the rotation of each wheel and a hydraulic unit / pump which puts pressure on the brakes.

The hydraulic unit in the ABS system works by equalizing the pressure on each individual brake or adjusting it to stop the car from skidding or veering.

What does it mean When my ABS light turns on

Your vehicle may not handle stopping on slippery surfaces like it is designed to under heavy braking. If both your ABS Light and brake system light come on, this is an emergency and you need to stop driving right away. Have your entire brake system inspected by a certified Many Autos mechanic.

Will ABS light turn on When brakes are worn

A Many Autos mechanic can check the brake fluid reservoir to see if the fluid needs to be topped off or if it’s a case of worn brake pads. Mechanics say some newer cars are equipped with sensors in the pads, which will cause the light to come on when they wear thin.
